Outline
"The Second World War Experience" is a four-volume series, published in association with the Imperial War Museum, covering the whole six-year global conflagration. "Volume three, The Second World War Experience: Turning of the Tide" charts the period when the Allies began to make consistent ground against the Axis. It opens in Russia with the epic battle for Stalingrad and the start of the German westward retreat that would not end until the Battle for Berlin two years later. In Africa the Allied armies met with Rommel's Afrika Korps at El Alamein. In the Far East the bitter struggle with the Japanese continues, but this time in the Allies' favour. And on mainland Europe the Allies finally gained significant ground with the invasion and eventual surrender of one of the major Axis Powers - Italy. Rare items of memorabilia sourced from around the world combined with an audio CD of veterans' first-hand accounts bring the era and the events to life as never before. The memorabilia includes: Montgomery's orders for El Alamein; Stalin's annotated proof of his famous 5 September 1942 order regarding partisan warfare; and diary kept by a German soldier on the North African front.
